Olya Kondiyenko

Olya Kondiyenko is a self-taught Ukrainian-American artist whose work is deeply rooted in her lifelong search for meaning, identity, and purpose. Growing up in Ukraine, Olya developed an early curiosity about the world around her and a desire to learn, explore, and contribute. Although she never had the opportunity to attend art school, creativity would eventually become an unexpected and transformative part of her life.

Olya’s path to becoming an artist was anything but traditional. She earned a master’s degree in Chemistry in Ukraine, served an 18-month service mission in England, and later moved to the United States, where she pursued graduate studies in Teaching English as a Second Language. Teaching gave her a meaningful way to connect with and empower others, but throughout the different chapters of her life, she continued to search for a deeper understanding of who she was and what she had to offer the world.

That search eventually led her to painting. For her 35th birthday, Olya received a Paint Nite experience from her husband. Until then, she had never seriously considered herself an artist. But once she picked up a brush, something awakened. She soon began studying oil painting in a community class, and what started as an unexpected experiment quickly became a profound creative and emotional outlet.

Painting became a form of therapy and self-discovery—a way to process emotions, reconnect with herself, and see beauty in the world around her. As her passion grew, she found herself waking before dawn simply to create. Through painting, she discovered not only a talent she had never known she possessed, but also a sense of confidence, identity, and purpose.

Nature has become Olya’s primary source of inspiration. She is drawn to landscapes, light, color, and the quiet moments that leave a lasting emotional impression. Her paintings often begin with a place, memory, photograph, or feeling, but evolve into something more personal. Rather than simply reproducing what she sees, she uses color, light, and simplified forms to explore how a place makes her feel.

Olya paints primarily in oil using a layered process that begins with an acrylic underpainting. Her impressionistic approach reflects her belief that the world is not always exactly what we think we see. Through imagination, color, and perspective, we can interpret the world in our own way and find beauty where we might otherwise overlook it.

At the heart of Olya’s work is the belief that we have the ability to shape the way we experience our lives. Her paintings explore moments of peace, wonder, resilience, nostalgia, hope, and escape—inviting viewers to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and experience the world through their own imagination and emotions.

After years of searching for where she belonged, Olya feels she has finally found her voice through art. Painting has become her way of making sense of the world, sharing beauty with others, and contributing something meaningful of her own. Through her work, she hopes to bring a little more color, joy, and possibility into the lives of those who encounter it.
